IOPSA – Quo Vadis?

E-mail Print PDF

The institute is no different to most voluntary bodies in this day and age where the question may well be Quo Vadis – wither goest thou or modern parlance where are you going? IOPSA’s role in South Africa and into Africa has never been more critical. There are winds of change blowing about and most of them are not good winds and it is up to IOPSA to steer the good ship plumbing into steady waters with good wind behind it.

IOPSA Gauteng AGM

E-mail Print PDF

The IOPSA Gauteng AGM was held on the 21st August 2014, hosted by interim chairman, Rory Macnamara. Macnamara stated the necessity to grow together and emphasised that plumbing is a profession to be proud of. He thanked all in attendance for their continued support.

Four technical meetings will follow and will be sponsored by the following companies – Rothenberger in November, Cobra in February, and Plumblink in August, with May and November still open.

Cachet International was thanked for sponsoring this particular meeting.

Darin Reynolds, National Sales and Marketing Manager of Cachet International thanked IOPSA and its members for the acknowledgement of the company’s efforts, “We are proud to be a sponsor, and are pleased to announce that 2014 mark’s the company’s 15th birthday.

A new committee was established and consists of the following; Colin Oates, Craig Preston, Ryder Rollison, Dale Simon, Robert Winn, Adrian, Beeselaar, Malcolm Harris, and Dean Cane.

ComPrac operations manager Dawie Nel read out the Health and Safety Act in its current format. To illustrate his presentation, he showed a video of one of the world’s most dangerous highways to show that drivers don’t have to fear the arrival of a safety officer doing an audit on your project, so long as the act is adhered to.

“We are here to take your fear away. The act is here to protect the employer and the employee,” said Nel. “The employer must identify risks and inform employees, mitigate those risks, implement a plan that ensures risks are mitigated, do a risk assessment, and eliminate all hazards. Eliminate risk, substitute the risk, implement warning controls and use PPE. The employer has a duty to employees as well as building tenants.”

Nel briefly navigated attendees through the act, Plumbing Africa will be receiving contributions based on the discussion.

To better understand the act and ensure it is adhered to and hence avoid costly fines and building shutdowns, you can contact Dawie Nel on 0027 (0)11 425 6352.

As the meeting concluded, IOPSA national administrator, Jenny Calmeyer, who recently retired after 16 years of service, was formally bid farewell.

Calmeyer received a ticket-for-two to a boat cruise and a bouquet of flowers before announcing that she experienced a lot of wonderful times while working with IOPSA, made a lot of friends, and that she will miss everybody. She encouraged those in the industry to please attend the World Plumbing Conference, which she believes is the best part of being a part of IOPSA.
