Exxaro starts R250m water plant at SA coal mine

JSE-listed Exxaro Resources says it’s treating 10 million litres of water daily at its R250 million treatment plant at the Matla mine, in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

The facility “is set to reduce the safety risk posed by large quantities of water that have filled mined-out underground cavities,” the Pretoria-based company has said.

Of the water treated, about 6,5 million litres will be discharged into the Olifants River, while the rest will be used at the operation located in the country’s Mpumalanga province.

The company is developing a plant near Belfast that will start up by the end of the year, and another at the Arnot mine near Middelburg that will start up by 201
